The President of the Plastic Manufacturers Association of Ghana, Ebbo Botwe, has cautioned against rushing to ban Styrofoam, saying the move requires careful consideration and stakeholder engagement. This comes after President John Dramani Mahama announced plans to ban the importation and production of Styrofoam due to its environmental impact.
Botwe acknowledges concerns about pollution but argues that misconceptions about Styrofoam need to be addressed. He notes that Styrofoam is mostly air (95-96%) and its environmental impact is often exaggerated. Instead of a ban, Botwe suggests investing in waste collection, recycling, and public education.
The Plastic Manufacturers Association is set to meet with the Environment Minister between June 16 and 20 to provide an overview of the plastic industry. Botwe emphasizes the need for data-driven decisions to avoid unintended consequences for manufacturers, workers, and consumers.
