The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) feels betrayed by the government’s decision to increase the Energy Sector Levy by GH₵1, just days after commercial drivers were asked to reduce transport fares by 15%. The union’s Industrial Relations Officer, Abass Imoro, expressed disappointment over the lack of transparency and consultation during fare reduction negotiations.
Imoro claimed that if the union had known about the impending fuel levy hike, their approach to the fare reduction would have been different. The GH₵1 increase per liter of fuel undermines the 15% fare reduction, leaving drivers financially disadvantaged.
The GPRTU has given the government until June 10, 2025, to initiate discussions on the matter or face possible action. Imoro warned that the union may take further steps if their concerns are not addressed.
