Asante Akyem North MP, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, is still locked up in the Netherlands after his lawyers lost two bids to free him on bail.
Mr Frimpong was picked up at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on May 10, 2026, after landing from Ghana. His arrest followed a request from the United States over alleged romance fraud and money laundering.
Parliament has since confirmed he is being held and has reached out through Ghana’s embassy in The Hague. Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has also confirmed that consular support is being offered, including a visit to the MP in detention.
His legal team maintains that the warrant from a US magistrate court was only meant to secure him for questioning and does not amount to formal charges.
Speaking on the matter, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor said both the first bail request and the appeal were turned down.
“We have failed to secure bail for him in respect of the two applications that were brought before the court. And so he’s still in custody,” he said.
Dafeamekpor said the main extradition hearing will come off on November 18, 2026, unless something unexpected happens.
“Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the extradition hearing, properly so-called, will take place on the 18th of this month, 18th November. And so we are still before the court,” he said.
He also rubbished claims that the MP had already been flown to America, stressing that the case is still before the Dutch court.
“So he’s not been taken to the US as has been alleged. No, we’re still going through the records of the extradition process,” he added.
The November 18 session will decide whether the conditions for handing him over to the US have been satisfied.
Frimpong remains in custody while the process continues. He has not been found guilty of the allegations against him.
