The Central North Regional Police Command has arrested three Chinese nationals for engaging in illegal mining activities at Twifo Denyase in the Central Region. The arrest is part of a broader crackdown on galamsey operations along the heavily polluted Pra River.
The police retrieved two pump-action guns, 22 cartridges, and two excavators, and destroyed some chanfang machines that were being used in the illegal mining operations. Several Ghanaian accomplices fled the scene upon police arrival, with some swimming across the river to evade capture.
The command has arrested 23 suspects involved in galamsey activities over the past four days and confiscated six excavators, along with other heavy mining equipment. DCOP Abraham Acquaye highlighted challenges, including interference from local political figures and influential individuals attempting to disrupt operations, as well as resource constraints such as the need for bulletproof vests, life jackets, and vehicles.
