The chiefs, elders and people of the Klikor Traditional Area in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region have formally installed and sworn in Dr Frank Hukporti as their new Paramount Chief, with the stool name Torgbiga Addo IX.
He succeeds the late Torgbiga Addo VIII, who served as Paramount Chief and President of the Klikor Traditional Council from 1983 until his death on January 14, 2026, aged 93.
The late chief was laid to rest on Saturday, October 24, 2026, following traditional funeral rites held during the preceding week. His successor was formally installed and sworn in the following day, Sunday, October 25.
Building on his predecessor’s legacy
Speaking to the media ahead of the installation ceremonies, Torgbiga Addo IX highlighted the achievements of his predecessor, particularly his contributions to education and community development during his 43-year reign.
The late Torgbiga Addo VIII, an educationist who taught at a training college before ascending the stool, placed education at the centre of his leadership.
During his reign, basic schools were established in virtually every community within the traditional area. He also championed the establishment of Klikor Secondary Technical School (Klistec), where he served as its first headmaster.
His development efforts extended to access to potable water, with partnerships involving non-governmental organisations and private institutions helping to provide water facilities to communities across the area.
Torgbiga Addo IX has pledged to build on these achievements, identifying tertiary education as one of his major priorities.
He has expressed an ambition to establish a university in Klikor, citing the absence of a university in the Ketu South Municipality.
He has also identified the improvement of road networks connecting Klikor to neighbouring communities, including Agbozume and Aflao, as an urgent development priority.
Profile of the new Paramount Chief
Torgbiga Addo IX is a retired Deputy Commissioner of Police and former Director of Bands of the Ghana Police Service.
A German-trained educationist and distinguished musicologist, he holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Bayreuth in Germany.
He is credited with pioneering the concept of “Musical Domestication” and has established himself as an educator, conductor and author.
He is also the founder and coordinator of the Brass Band Festival at Klikor-Agbozume and maintains institutional links with the German Embassy and the Goethe-Institut in Accra.
Vision to transform Klikor into a modern city
Klikor is regarded as one of the oldest Ewe settlements and has historically been recognised as a spiritual centre, with several traditional shrines of cultural and religious significance.
The area’s population is predominantly made up of peasant farmers and kente weavers.
The new Paramount Chief has outlined a long-term vision of transforming Klikor into a modern city while seeking UNESCO recognition for its historic shrines as a cultural heritage site.
His vision places emphasis on infrastructure development, education and the preservation of the area’s cultural heritage.
Several traditional rulers participated in or were acknowledged during preparations for the installation and the ceremonies.
They included Togbiga Afede XIV of Asogli State in Ho, Torgbiga Tenge Dzokoto VII of Anyako, Togbiga Amenya Fiti V of Aflao, Torgbiga Adamah III of Agbozume, Torgbiga Akpo Ashiakpor VI of Weta and Torgbiga Wenya III of Anlo State.
The installation was announced by the chiefs, elders and people of the Klikor Traditional Area in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.
