The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have called off their planned sit-down strike following assurances from the government to address concerns over trading activities along road corridor.

The two transport groups announced the planned action on November 2, 2026, citing what they described as the authorities’ failure to clear roadways of trading activities.

The strike was expected to disrupt commercial transport services nationwide. Its suspension means transport operations will continue while the government works to address the concerns raised by the unions.

In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, the groups said the decision followed a meeting held on Tuesday, November 3, with the Ministers for the Interior; Transport; and Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

The unions said the ministers had committed to addressing their concerns, which include roadside trading, the provision of adequate road signage, sustained public education and continued engagement with transport operators.

“The Ministers assured us of their firm commitments to address our concerns, including the trading activities on road corridors, adequate signage, sustained public education and continued engagement with transport operators,” the statement said.

The meeting also led to the formation of a committee tasked with identifying areas affected by roadside trading and recommending measures to address the situation.

Although the planned industrial action has been called off, the unions expect the government to resolve all the concerns raised within 30 days.

They warned that failure to meet the deadline could lead to the resumption of the strike.

“It is our expectation that all our concerns raised during the meeting will be addressed within 30 days, failure of which we would have no option than to embark on the sit-down strike,” the statement said.

The GPRTU and GRTCC thanked the ministers for what they described as their prompt engagement and apologised to commuters and the general public for any inconvenience the planned strike could have caused.
