The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has announced a significant crackdown on illegal mining activities in the country. As part of the government’s efforts to sanitize the mining sector, 55 small-scale mining licenses have been revoked, and 907 out of 1,278 active licenses are under investigation for possible revocation due to irregularities.

The audit by the Small-Scale Mining Review Committee has identified irregularities in these licenses, prompting the review. A similar audit is underway for large-scale mining operations to ensure compliance with environmental and legal standards.

The Ministry, in collaboration with national security agencies, has seized 425 excavators and other machines used in illegal mining. A total of 1,345 arrests have been made nationwide, with prosecutions actively progressing. In Ghana’s forest reserves, the crackdown has resulted in the confiscation of 177 excavators, 4 bulldozers, 12 vehicles, 43 motorcycles, and other equipment. A total of 286 individuals have been arrested in these areas.

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to restoring integrity to Ghana’s mining sector, safeguarding natural resources, and upholding environmental sustainability. The Attorney-General is expected to provide further updates on the status of prosecutions.
