The Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA) has slammed the recent assault on medical staff at Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ridge, branding it a shocking display of lawlessness that jeopardizes healthcare worker safety and hampers emergency care. A viral video captured relatives of an accident victim brawling with emergency personnel over supposed treatment delays.
The clash turned ugly with verbal abuse and physical aggression against a nurse, prompting hospital management to call in the Ghana Police to regain control.
In an August 19, 2025, statement signed by National Chairman, Dr. Emmanuel Owusu Owiafe, and General Secretary, Frederick Yiadom Darfour, GHOSPA voiced “dismay and profound indignation” over the video showing the attack on hospital staff members. “Pharmacists, alongside doctors, nurses, midwives, and all health workers, are dedicated to the sacred duty of saving lives and ensuring the well-being of all Ghanaians. Our healthcare facilities are zones of healing, not battlegrounds for thuggery,” the Association emphasized.
GHOSPA warned that rising violent incidents, coupled with impunity and perceived backing of perpetrators by some officials, could crush the morale of stressed healthcare professionals. The Association demanded:
- Immediate Action: Arrest and prosecute all attackers.
- Boost Security: Enhanced measures at Ridge Hospital’s Emergency Unit.
- Support for Staff: Comprehensive medical, psychological, and legal aid for affected workers.
- Government Stance: Clear ministerial condemnation affirming protection for health professionals.
GHOSPA affirmed solidarity with nationwide health workers, stressing healthcare provider safety is non-negotiable. “We assure the public of our unwavering commitment to providing continuous pharmaceutical care, but this must be done in an environment that is safe and secure for both providers and recipients of healthcare,” the statement concluded.
