PMI Warns Africa’s Infrastructure Boom Faces 57% Construction Talent Gap

Sub-Saharan Africa’s construction sector is entering a critical phase, driven by the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA), which aims to deliver over 400 major projects by 2040. Valued at more than $360 billion, the initiative is expected to boost regional integration, industrialisation and long-term economic growth.

However, new research by the Project Management Institute (PMI) warns that the region faces a significant shortage of skilled professionals to deliver these projects. Demand for construction project professionals is projected to rise from about 260,000 in 2025 to over 410,000 by 2035, leaving a gap of nearly 150,000 workers.

PMI notes that while construction is a key driver of economic growth and job creation, it remains highly complex and inefficient. About 10% of global project investment is lost each year due to poor performance—translating into billions in potential losses for Africa.

According to George Asamani, strong project management is essential to avoid delays, cost overruns and wasted resources.

The report also highlights challenges such as poor coordination among stakeholders and limited adoption of technology. Tools like digital modelling and artificial intelligence are seen as crucial to improving efficiency and transparency.

To address the talent gap, PMI is calling for long-term investment in training, better working conditions and structured career development. It emphasises that building skilled project professionals is key to ensuring infrastructure projects deliver real economic and social benefits.
