The Economic Community of West African States has appointed former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to head its Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) for the upcoming presidential elections in the Republic of Benin.
The mission, scheduled to be deployed from April 7 to 15, 2026, reflects ECOWAS’ commitment to promoting credible, transparent and peaceful elections across the region. The appointment was confirmed in a statement issued by the ECOWAS Commission on Friday, March 27.
Benin’s presidential election, set for April 12, is expected to be a pivotal moment in the country’s democratic journey. Incumbent President Patrice Talon, who has been in office since 2016, is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term—a move widely viewed as reinforcing democratic norms in a region facing governance challenges.
Under Benin’s electoral system, a candidate must secure more than 50 percent of valid votes to win in the first round, otherwise a runoff election is held.
Akufo-Addo’s role will be guided by the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance (2001), which mandates election observers to assess the conduct of polls, the neutrality of state institutions and the overall electoral environment.
ECOWAS said the mission is intended to serve as a catalyst for strengthening democracy, good governance and regional stability, as West Africa continues efforts to uphold constitutional rule and peaceful political transitions.
