Akufo-Addo Urges Completion of Agenda 111 Projects to Boost Healthcare Delivery

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on the administration of John Dramani Mahama to prioritise the completion and operationalisation of the Agenda 111 hospital projects initiated during his tenure.

He made the appeal at the launch of the centenary celebrations of the Kyebi Government Hospital, stressing that access to quality healthcare should not be influenced by partisan considerations.

According to the former President, bringing the Agenda 111 facilities into full operation would significantly enhance healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved areas.

The Agenda 111 initiative, a flagship programme under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, was designed to construct 111 hospitals nationwide to address gaps in access to medical care.

The centenary event, organised by the Akyem Kyebi Government Hospital Authority in collaboration with the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, also served as a fundraising platform to support infrastructure development at the facility.

Reinforcing the need for continuity in national development, Mr Akufo-Addo urged authorities to ensure that the projects are completed and not abandoned.

Meanwhile, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Isaac Adu-Opoku Antwi, highlighted critical challenges facing the century-old facility.

He pointed to the absence of essential infrastructure, including a maternity block, a children’s ward, a physiotherapy unit and residential accommodation for staff.

Dr Antwi expressed concern over the strain on existing facilities, revealing that children are currently accommodated in the same wards as pregnant women, a situation he said affects the quality of care.

He noted that plans are underway to construct new wards as part of the hospital’s centenary legacy projects.

Also addressing the gathering, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin called for a comprehensive upgrade of the hospital, urging stakeholders to support efforts to modernise the facility to meet current healthcare demands.

The Agenda 111 programme has come under public scrutiny in recent times due to delays, but remains a key initiative aimed at expanding healthcare access across Ghana.
