The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has emphasised that the ongoing decongestion exercise in the Central Business District (CBD) is not a one-off event, but a sustained campaign to reclaim public spaces and improve pedestrian and vehicular movement.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, May 20, the Mayor stressed that the initiative would continue until all unauthorised structures and street obstructions are removed.
“This exercise is not a nine-day wonder; we are on the street till we make sure that the roads are clear. We are not done. For the next hour, we are going back to the street. From here we are going to Circle, and if there is more strength, we will go to Kaneshie. Then we continue tomorrow,” the Mayor stated.

The decongestion campaign, launched earlier in the day, is being undertaken by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA). The exercise focuses on areas around the AMA Head Office, including Kinbu Road to Railways, ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and Opera Square to Adabraka.
City authorities maintain that the campaign is a strategic step toward restoring discipline in the capital and enhancing public safety. The AMA is determined to tackle congestion, enforce city by-laws, and enhance sanitation across key areas of the capital.
