Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has ordered every Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) across the region to step up emergency action at once after heavy downpours triggered floods on Monday, June 29, 2026.
In a release, the Minister told all MMDCEs to send out rescue crews, personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and other specialist staff to impacted areas to conduct evacuations, move stranded people to safety where required, evaluate the level of destruction, and deliver urgent aid.
“The safety and well-being of every resident remain my highest priority. I have therefore directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to immediately move into their communities with their emergency response teams, NADMO officers and all relevant technical officers to intensify rescue operations, evacuate persons trapped by floodwater where necessary, assess the situation on the ground and provide immediate relief to affected residents.
“Every MMDCE is expected to remain fully engaged until the situation is brought under control. This is a time for decisive leadership and swift action,” she directed. The Minister said the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council is working with NADMO, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service and other emergency bodies to manage the rescue effort.
With the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMA) predicting further rain, she advised residents to be highly careful by limiting non-essential travel and keeping clear of flood-prone zones, drainage channels and swift-moving water.
She also called on parents and caregivers to make sure children stay out of floodwaters and do not try to cross inundated streets or drains.
The Minister asked anyone needing urgent help to reach NADMO via its emergency hotlines or WhatsApp line and urged the public to work with rescue teams and follow all safety instructions.
“Together with our Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and our emergency response agencies, we will continue to work tirelessly to protect lives and assist those in need and support our communities through this challenging period,” she added.
The Minister conveyed condolences to those hit by the floods, confirming that authorities are moving to supply relief and safeguard lives and property.“My heart goes out to all individuals and families who have been affected by this unfortunate incident. I sincerely sympathise with those who have suffered losses, displacement and other hardships, and I want to assure every affected resident that you are not alone. We stand with you during this difficult period,” she stated.
