Motorists on the Accra-Madina route got some relief on Tuesday, March 10, as authorities reopened a lane closed for the Accra-Tema Motorway Expansion Project. The lane was shut on Monday, March 9, for construction work near Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, causing heavy congestion.
“We planned this for some time, and about three months ago, we piloted the diversion… We are adding three more lanes at Tetteh Quarshie,” said Mr. Kwabena Bempong, Chief Resident Engineer.
The diversion caused chaos, with thousands stuck in traffic. “We decided to reopen the closed lane due to the massive traffic we experienced yesterday,” he added.
The Accra-Madina road is a key route, linking residential areas to Accra’s central parts. Disruptions often impact surrounding areas. The expansion project aims to improve traffic flow, but the closure highlighted the challenges of managing commuter traffic. Authorities reopened the lane to ease the congestion, which had ripple effects across surrounding routes.
