New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman hopeful Awentami Paul Afoko says he is confident the party can return to government in 2028 if it unites and rebuilds its structures.
Mr Afoko, a former National Chairman of the NPP, said the party would need only two years in opposition before, in his view, power could return to the NPP if he is elected to lead the party.
He made the remarks during his campaign tour of the Western, Central and Eastern Regions, where he engaged delegates ahead of the party’s National Chairmanship election.
“I do not have a magic wand, but I can assure you that if we close our ranks and rally behind me to become the National Chairman, we have only two years to stay in opposition, and then power will be ours,” he told constituency executives to cheers from supporters.
Afoko focuses on unity
A major theme of Mr Afoko’s campaign has been his 3Rs Campaign Blueprint — Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture Power, which he says provides a framework for repositioning the party ahead of the 2028 general election.
He said the NPP must move beyond its past internal disagreements and focus on rebuilding cohesion across the party.
“We have all the ingredients for victory. What we lack is unity. My message to every constituency, every region, is simple: set aside our differences, reunite as one family, and rebuild the structures that have made us formidable in the past,” he said.
On the rebuilding component of his blueprint, Mr Afoko pledged to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures and revamp constituency and polling-station organisation.
He also promised to restore confidence among party supporters and activists who, he said, had felt neglected in recent years.
According to Mr Afoko, a stronger grassroots organisation, combined with greater unity among the party’s leadership, would provide the organisational foundation he believes the NPP needs to mount a campaign to return to government in 2028.
Afoko intensifies campaign
Mr Afoko’s campaign tour has taken him to several regions as he seeks support ahead of the NPP’s National Chairmanship contest.
During his engagements, he has continued to emphasise party unity, grassroots mobilisation and organisational rebuilding as central elements of his campaign.
The NPP is scheduled to elect its National Chairman on October 3, with the contest set to take place at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
Mr Afoko is intensifying his engagements with delegates ahead of the election, with his 3Rs — Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture Power — serving as the central message of his campaign.
