The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has issued a one-month quit notice to traders and other occupants on sections of land at Agbogbloshie, widely known as Nzema Market, to make way for a new 24-Hour Economy Market.
The notice was officially delivered on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 and will lapse on August 28. After that date, the Assembly says it will start demolishing structures on the earmarked sections.
In a Facebook update on Monday, August 10, AMA listed the affected zones as the Agbogbloshie Cargo Station, Nzema Market and parts of the Yam Market. AMA stated that all traders and business operators impacted by the project will be moved to an alternative site the Assembly has set aside for them.
The move follows several engagements between the Assembly and key stakeholders, including traditional leaders, market executives, traders and other community reps, on the planned redevelopment and eviction.
As part of preparations, AMA marked buildings within the project area on Tuesday. It then launched a public education and sensitisation drive on Wednesday, August 5, to brief traders, community leaders and residents on the redevelopment.
The outreach is also meant to explain the benefits of the project, how the clearance will be done, and the relocation plans for affected traders and occupants.
According to the Assembly, the redevelopment was part of measures to roll out the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy through the construction of a dedicated market complex. All those affected have been advised to note the August 28 deadline and begin arrangements to move to the assigned location.
