The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on the government to prioritise Ghanaian companies in the allocation of mining concessions, allowing them to partner with foreign investors if needed. This, he believes, will strengthen the local currency and provide opportunities for young Ghanaians to invest in the stock market.
“We need to prioritise Ghanaians in the allocation of mining concessions. If they later choose to partner with foreign investors, that should be their decision. This approach will strengthen the local currency. Once they secure the lease, they can list on the stock exchange and raise capital to purchase equipment for mining operations here in Ghana. Don’t our young people also deserve the opportunity to invest in the stock market and earn returns?” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasised.
The Asantehene made this appeal during a meeting with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Minerals Commission, who presented a proposal to review Ghana’s Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703). The review aims to improve sector governance and increase the role of traditional authorities.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II also clarified that the Minerals Commission is operating within the law and any changes to the current framework would require constitutional reform. “The Minerals Commission is operating within the confines of the law. Any changes to the current framework must be addressed through the Constitutional Review Committee,” he stated.
