A Chief Inspector of the Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region is under investigation over allegations that he rented unauthorised structures to commercial sex workers at Asafo BB in Kumasi.
The officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, is alleged to have owned several illegal structures in the area, according to a police statement.
The allegations emerged after a special task force from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) launched a demolition exercise targeting unauthorised structures erected along the Subin Stream behind the COCOBOD building in Adum.
The operation was disrupted when some occupants of the structures reportedly attacked the task force, which comprised military personnel and city guards.
The assailants allegedly pelted the team with stones and clubs, damaging two pickup trucks and an excavator used for the demolition. The vehicles sustained shattered windscreens and deflated tyres during the confrontation.
Three members of the task force, including a soldier, sustained varying degrees of injury in the incident.
Following the violence, Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyeman-Boadi announced that the Assembly would carry out a second phase of the demolition exercise without prior notice.
In a statement, the Ghana Police Service said it was treating the allegations against the officer with the utmost seriousness and had commenced investigations.
The Service indicated that it would provide further updates as investigations progress.
Meanwhile, speaking on Luv FM, the Head of Physical Planning at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Benjamin Agyenim-Boateng, alleged that the officer owned about 12 unauthorised structures within the enclave.
