The Attorney-General’s Department has begun moves to consolidate two separate cases against Nana Yaw Bonsu Kwarteng, the self-styled online pastor accused of defrauding women through alleged romance scams, and transfer them to the High Court.
When the case was called at the Accra Circuit Court One, an Attorney from the Attorney-General’s Department told the court that the cases pending before Circuit Courts One and 10 would be consolidated and sent to the High Court.
The Police have also filed their disclosures ahead of the case management conference.
Kwarteng, 35, is jointly charged with his wife, Sally Akosua Amoasah, a Chartered Accountant. The couple face six counts of conspiracy to commit crime, namely defrauding by false pretences.
Sally faces additional charges of making, producing and possessing obscene material, while Kwarteng is also charged with defrauding by false pretences, resisting arrest, and making, producing and possessing obscene material. Both have pleaded not guilty.
Sally has been granted bail of GH¢100,000 with two sureties and ordered to report to the case investigator every Monday and Friday.
Alleged romance scam
The prosecution says there are seven complainants, including an ambassador and several businesswomen.
According to the amended facts, Kwarteng operated an Instagram account with about 21,000 followers, where he presented himself as a pastor and conducted online services. His wife allegedly assisted during the services and was aware of his activities.
The prosecution alleges that Kwarteng established relationships with the women, told some that God had revealed they were meant to marry him, and collected money from them under the pretext of clearing car tyres and containers.
One complainant allegedly gave him US$33,000, while another reportedly paid GH¢25,000. The prosecution said other complainants also gave him various sums in Ghana cedis and foreign currencies.
It further alleges that Kwarteng secretly recorded intimate photographs and videos of some of the women and later threatened to release them when they demanded their money back. Some of the material was allegedly shared with his wife.
Arrest and investigations
The prosecution said the couple went into hiding after the Police and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) began looking for them. Their Instagram accounts were also allegedly deactivated or changed.
Investigators reportedly arrested the couple at a hideout on July 20, 2026, two days after their alleged marriage ceremony in Kumasi. Kwarteng allegedly attempted to escape but was recaptured.
The prosecution further alleged that Sally registered a sole proprietorship in her name, which was used to create the impression that the couple operated a legitimate business.
Investigators have reportedly uncovered several intimate videos involving different alleged victims. The prosecution said Kwarteng is also facing related cases being investigated by EOCO and the Nima Police.
It added that several women had allegedly fallen victim to his activities since 2021, with additional alleged victims subsequently contacting the Police.
The case has been adjourned to September 8, 2026, while investigations continue.
