A joint operation by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Tema West Municipal Assembly has commenced a three-day demolition exercise targeting illegal structures within the Golf Course enclave of the Sakumo Ramsar Site. The exercise, which began on Tuesday, May 5, is part of intensified efforts to restore natural watercourses and mitigate flooding risks as the rainy season approaches.
According to authorities, widespread encroachment along critical drainage channels has significantly obstructed water flow, thereby exacerbating flood conditions in surrounding communities.
Officials underscored that the exercise is not an isolated intervention but forms part of sustained enforcement measures aimed at safeguarding the ecologically sensitive Ramsar site. Despite prior warnings, notices, and earlier demolition efforts, unauthorised developments have persisted, necessitating what authorities describe as a more decisive and coordinated response.
The Sakumo Ramsar Site, recognised for its international ecological significance, continues to face mounting pressure from human activities, particularly illegal construction. Authorities have warned that ongoing disregard for planning regulations poses a serious threat to environmental sustainability and public safety, especially in the context of increasing flood risks.
Security personnel have been deployed to maintain order throughout the operation, while affected individuals have been urged to cooperate fully with officials to ensure a smooth and orderly process.
