A three-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities built for Kamalo D/A Junior High School in the Kwahu Afram Plains North District of the Eastern Region has been abandoned after bats invaded the facility.
The school is also facing a severe teacher shortage, with only two teachers responsible for both primary and junior high school pupils, resulting in combined classes and increased pressure on staff.
The situation was revealed by the Public Interest Accountability Committee (PIAC) following its inspection of petroleum revenue-funded projects in the Eastern Region.
During the tour, the Committee also inspected completed boreholes fitted with hand pumps at Kubease and Bodua and noted that they were providing a dependable water supply to residents of the beneficiary communities.
At Maame Krobo, PIAC inspected a community-based mechanised solar-powered water system and found that although construction had been completed, the facility had broken down and was not functioning at the time of the visit.
The Committee further assessed pothole patching works on the Maame Krobo Regional Boundary Road and observed that some of the repaired sections had already begun to deteriorate.
“PIAC was informed that arrangements were underway for a contractor to commence additional rehabilitation works on the road,” the Committee stated.
At the Afram Plains Agricultural Zone (Konadu Enclaves), PIAC inspected ongoing construction of irrigation facilities, with completion expected by October 2026. The Committee noted that the project is expected to be leased to commercial farmers to help increase agricultural productivity in the area.
Meanwhile, at Tease, PIAC inspected the Agenda 111 hospital project and observed that construction had stalled, with the site currently abandoned.
