Award-winning musician Black Sherif has sparked fresh debate ahead of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards after questioning why fellow artiste Wendy Shay is not being widely considered for the coveted Artiste of the Year title.
Speaking on The Late Nite Celebrity Show with Kafui Dey, Black Sherif expressed concern over what he described as a lack of recognition for the singer, particularly in top award conversations.
“I don’t like how people are not mentioning Wendy Shay’s name for Artiste of the Year,” he said, while also calling for greater visibility for women in major award categories.
His comments have since ignited discussions across social media, with some applauding his stance as fair and inclusive, while others suggest it may be a strategic remark as competition intensifies ahead of the awards.
Wendy Shay, however, has enjoyed a strong year musically. She recently embarked on a tour in Sierra Leone following the release of her fourth studio album, Ready, which has reportedly amassed over 50 million streams across platforms.
The project features collaborations with notable artistes, including Mavado, Olivetheboy, Phina and Bedjine.
Beyond her recorded work, the Rufftown Records artiste drew a massive crowd to her annual Shay Concert at the West Hills Mall last November, with attendance estimated at around 100,000 fans.
She also secured continental recognition earlier this year, winning Best Female Artist in West Africa at the All Africa Music Awards.
As the Telecel Ghana Music Awards draw closer, conversations around gender representation and industry recognition continue to gain momentum, with Black Sherif’s remarks adding a new dimension to the ongoing debate.
