Tension is mounting in Bortianor in the Greater Accra Region over a protracted chieftaincy dispute that has seen four different chiefs enstooled in just six months, raising fears of a violent clash.
The struggle for the traditional stool has intensified as rival groups continue to push their own candidates. The crisis took a dramatic turn on Friday, September 11, 2026, when one royal family reportedly enstooled two chiefs on the same day in separate ceremonies held hours apart.
Sources say the first enstoolment took place around 6:00 a.m., with a second ceremony organised at about 10:00 a.m. the same morning.
The development has left many residents confused, as one royal house now has two chiefs. This latest action has brought the total number of persons enstooled by various factions in the community to four in the last six months, further polarising the traditional area.
Loyalists of the rival chiefs are holding firm to their claims, each demanding recognition for their chosen leader. The impasse has created anxiety among locals, who worry the standoff could degenerate into violence if not resolved quickly through traditional mechanisms and lawful means.
