The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, is pushing for local tomato production boost, calling Burkina Faso’s export ban a wake-up call.
Speaking at the Ghana Export-Import Bank’s conference in Accra on March 25, Dr. Asiama said Ghana has the capacity to meet its own demand.
“If Burkina Faso says no exports, why should Ghana be in a crisis? We have the capability,” he stressed. Officials from the Agriculture Ministry are already discussing solutions.
He highlighted regions suited for tomato farming, citing 500,000+ young job-seekers and readily available seeds.Onions mature in 3-4 months, offering a quick opportunity.
Dr. Asiama noted financing hurdles, saying EXIM Bank needs more resources to support farmers. Local tomatoes can be processed and preserved with modern tech, ensuring urban consumers access fresh produce even without imports. “Such interventions may not solve entirely, but they can mitigate,” he said
