The Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral project has been ordered to surrender the project site to government by October 31, 2026.
The directive was issued in a letter by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, acting on President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to disband the Board.
Under the instruction, the trustees are expected to collaborate with the project consultant to complete all formalities for the transfer before the deadline expires.
According to the Ministry, taking possession of the site will position government to make a final determination on the future direction of the controversial project.
The Minister also expressed gratitude to the outgoing Board members for their service and commitment to the promotion of the Christian faith in Ghana.
The National Cathedral project has in recent years generated intense public debate, with concerns raised over its financing, transparency and stalled construction. Government says it will in due course announce its next line of action.
