Chief Summoned for Halting Galamsey

The pollutted state of River Bissi, Tano North North Municipality

The Sub-Chief (Odikro) of Adagyamim in the Tano Municipal District, Nana Antwi Bosiako II, has been summoned by the Kyidomhene of Duayaw-Nkwanta Traditional Council to appear before them.

Ghanaian RADAR understands the summons follows Nana Antwi Boasiako II’s resolve to stop illegal miners (galamseyers) operating in Adagyamem and the surrounding Bissi area from carrying out their nefarious activities.

Sources close to the Duayaw-Nkwanta Paramountcy indicated that the Odikro is being coerced to publicly deny that illegal miners are operating in Adagyamem and around Bissi.

Investigations established that the illegal miners stormed the Adagyamem community in September of this year. Reports indicate the galamseyers have already polluted the only three water bodies—Rivers Bissi, Adwasu and Subri—which all join River Tano and serve residents in Sunyani.

Though security personnel from Goaso have attempted to intervene, the galamseyers consistently get wind of their arrival and evade capture.

Ghanaian RADAR discovered the illegal miners have now adopted a new method, operating deep in the night and causing significant havoc to farmlands.

A farmer in Bissi who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of being attacked lamented that they can no longer use River Bissi for domestic or irrigation purposes.

“Now we are struggling to get water to feed our crops on our farms, and anytime we are going to our farms we have to carry sachet water along,” the farmer said.

Against this backdrop, the farmers are calling on the government to act with urgency to stop the illegal miners and prevent further harm.
