Lawyers for Ghanaian a cappella group, Alabaster Box, have written to rapper Medikal, alleging that he used a portion of their song “Akwaaba” without consent in his latest track “Welcome to Africa.” The letter claims that the first 10 seconds of Medikal’s song reproduce their work, and that the title and verses of his track suggest a clear connection to Alabaster Box’s song.
The group asserts that Medikal’s aggressive promotion and distribution of “Welcome to Africa” on major streaming platforms further exacerbate the alleged copyright violation. Alabaster Box’s lawyers have demanded that Medikal take immediate action to address the issue.
The demands include the removal of “Welcome to Africa” from all digital and traditional platforms, cessation of marketing and performance related to the track, and termination of contracts associated with its production and distribution. Medikal is also required to provide an account of revenue generated from the song and disclose all individuals or companies involved in its promotion and distribution.
Failure to comply with these demands will result in legal action against Medikal. The rapper has yet to respond to the allegations.
