An Akropong Circuit Court has remanded former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, following his arrest in connection with a disputed property demolition at Kitase in the Akuapem South District of the Eastern Region.
Mr Blay, a legal practitioner and veteran politician, was handed over to the Ghana Police Service at Akropong on Monday, March 16, 2026, after officers in Accra executed a criminal arrest warrant that had reportedly been outstanding for nearly a year.
He was subsequently arraigned before the court and ordered to remain in custody until his next appearance scheduled for April 9, 2026.
The case stems from a complaint by a landowner who alleges that Mr Blay ordered the demolition of a house under construction on a disputed parcel of land in Kitase.
According to court records, the matter began after a report was filed with the police over the alleged destruction of property. Investigators claimed Mr Blay failed to honour invitations to assist with the investigation.
Charges were subsequently filed in early 2025, but the former NPP chairman did not appear in court on a scheduled date in April 2025, prompting the court to issue a warrant for his arrest.
The warrant remained active until it was executed on Monday.
However, sources close to Mr Blay have rejected claims that he deliberately evaded the law, insisting he was unaware of the arrest warrant until his arrest.
They argue that the matter is essentially a civil dispute linked to a land purchase dating back to 1994, which has been the subject of prolonged litigation.
Addressing the allegation of demolition, the sources maintained that Mr Blay did not order the destruction of any building. Instead, they claim he directed the clearing of a bare plot of land in January 2026 for public health reasons to prevent it from becoming a breeding ground for reptiles and other animals.
The land dispute has a long legal history. The complainant previously secured a favourable ruling at the Koforidua High Court, but Mr Blay’s legal team has since filed an appeal against that decision.
