Damang Gold Mine Limited has invested approximately $250 million in a new fleet of heavy-duty mining equipment as part of efforts to expand operations, increase productivity and strengthen Ghanaian participation in the country’s mining sector.
The equipment, which is currently being transported from Accra to the Damang Mine site, includes a range of advanced machinery designed to enhance operational efficiency and support large-scale mining activities.
Among the newly acquired assets are Liebherr excavators, 30 Caterpillar 777 dump trucks and 15 Caterpillar 395 excavators. Company officials indicate that additional equipment is expected to be added to the fleet in the coming months.
The investment is anticipated to significantly increase production capacity, improve operational performance, create employment opportunities and reinforce local ownership within Ghana’s mining industry.
Industry observers describe the acquisition as one of the largest recent investments in mining equipment by a wholly Ghanaian-owned company.
The Damang Mine, previously operated by Gold Fields Ghana Limited, was recently transferred to Engineers and Planners Limited after the indigenous mining and construction firm successfully secured the concession.
Speaking after assuming control of the mine, Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners, Ibrahim Mahama, reaffirmed his commitment to transforming the operation into a model of Ghanaian enterprise and investment.
“I would say that, look, if we all put our minds together, this is a success story. And the plan I have for Damang Mine is not a joke. I just want to prove that we can invest in ourselves in this country,” he stated.
Mr. Mahama noted that his association with the Damang Mine spans nearly three decades and pledged to undertake major investments aimed at improving both the mine and the surrounding communities.
As part of the company’s long-term development strategy, he announced plans to construct a concrete road linking Damang to Cape Coast within the next two years. He also revealed plans to develop an airport in the area within six months to improve accessibility and support economic activity.
The latest investment underscores growing confidence in indigenous participation within Ghana’s extractive sector and highlights efforts to demonstrate that locally owned companies can successfully manage and expand large-scale mining operations.
The expansion of the Damang Mine is expected to contribute to increased mineral production, job creation, infrastructure development and broader economic growth in the Western Region and beyond.
