Ghanaian comedian DKB has recounted a memorable encounter with former President John Dramani Mahama, years after he helped lead a demonstration against his government.
Speaking at his September SoHo Comedy Night, which also marked his birthday celebration, DKB revealed that he participated in a demonstration against the Mahama administration in May 2015. However, just months later, in October, he found himself performing for Mahama and the then Prime Minister of Ethiopia.
DKB said he felt nervous when he approached Mahama for a photograph because of his previous role in the protest.
“I was a bit scared because I was a ringleader in the demonstration. But JM didn’t care,” he recalled.
According to the comedian, Mahama recognised him and immediately made a joke about his name, referencing the controversial Dumsor Must Stop (DKM) campaign.
The joke broke the tension, and the two laughed together.
DKB said the encounter changed his perception of Mahama and left him impressed by the former president’s sense of humour.
“I got goosebumps on my body because the president just told me a joke,” he said.
He described Mahama as a “professional comedian” and said he was particularly struck by the former president’s willingness to joke with someone who had openly opposed his administration.
DKB has previously praised Mahama’s appreciation of comedy and his ability to engage with comedians.
