Donald Trump is in Beijing for a high-stakes two-day visit and is set to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
The US president’s first official engagement today will be an arrival ceremony with Xi at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People.
The two leaders will also hold talks before a state banquet scheduled for later this evening.
Tariffs, competition over tech, the Iran war and Taiwan are on the agenda for the two superpowers.
Trump is joined by tech bosses, including Tesla’s Elon Musk and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang – before his arrival he said he would ask China to “open up” to US industry.
Trump, who was the last US president to visit in 2017, returns to a stronger, more assertive China keen to portray itself as a stable global power, our China correspondent writes.
