The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has cautioned governing councils of public universities to stay out of the daily running of institutions, warning that such interference weakens effective administration.
Speaking at the opening of a new hostel at Wisconsin International University College in Feyiase, Ashanti Region, he said councils must carry out their supervisory duties in line with national development goals and also respect the independence of university management.
The Minister stressed that councils and management should cooperate instead of creating avoidable tension. He noted that the smooth governance of tertiary schools relies on a cordial working relationship between councils and management.
He added that councils found to be undermining management should not expect government support.“We have improved the governance of our institutions of higher learning. As I stand here, Minister for Education, I don’t interfere with the council of any university and how the council supports the management of the institution. So to those councils that are worrying management, they should desist from that conduct. They don’t have my policy support.“We expect the universities to be run effectively by councils and management. And we expect that the relationship between council and management would be one of collegiate atmosphere, that there is respect of council to management for the good of those institutions,” he said.
