A Dutch national and two other suspects have been arrested in connection with the seizure of 866 parcels of a white substance suspected to be cocaine at the Tema Port enclave.
The consignment, which was concealed in sacks of gari inside a 40-foot container, has an estimated street value of US$6.9 million, according to the police.
The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation by the Tema Regional Police Command on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
The suspects have been identified as 31-year-old Dutch national, Gilano Horwin; John Mensah Sabah, 41; and Alhaji Iddris Haruna.
According to the Tema Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Eric Asamoah Asiedu, the command received intelligence at about 7:15 p.m. that some young men were loading parcels of a white substance concealed in sacks of gari into a 40-foot container at a warehouse within the Tema Port enclave.
The consignment was allegedly being prepared for export when a police team arrived at the location.
The officers found three men supervising the loading operation and subsequently intercepted the container, which had been mounted on a white DAF truck with registration number WR 1118-10.
The suspects, together with the truck, were taken to the Tema Regional Police Headquarters for further investigations.
866 parcels recovered
A search of the sacks led to the recovery of 866 parcels containing the white substance suspected to be cocaine.
The police estimate the street value of the consignment at US$6,928,000.
DCOP Asamoah Asiedu disclosed the development at a press briefing on Thursday, August 6.
He said preliminary interrogation of the suspects led to one of them, identified by the police as Owin, allegedly stating that the substance was cocaine and claiming ownership of the consignment.
The three suspects have since been detained to assist with investigations.
The recovered substance has also been secured and will undergo forensic examination to establish its exact nature.
The Regional Police Commander said investigations were continuing.
Separate cannabis-related arrest
In a separate operation on the same day, the Prampram District Police also intercepted a taxi allegedly transporting substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
DCOP Asamoah Asiedu said the Tsopoli Police received information at about 5 p.m. on August 5 that the taxi was being pursued.
The police subsequently acted on the information and intercepted the vehicle as part of efforts to establish the nature and source of the suspected narcotic substance.
Further details on the second operation are expected as investigations continue.
