The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice has unanimously thrown out a suit by former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo disputing her removal as Chief Justice and Justice of Ghana’s Supreme Court.

The decision, handed down on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, is a major blow to Justice Torkonoo, who had asked the regional court to review the process that ended her tenure.

The panel’s full reasoning was not immediately released after the ruling.Still, the unanimous verdict closes her case before the ECOWAS Court seeking to overturn the legality of her ouster.Justice Torkonoo went to the regional court after leaving office, claiming her rights were breached during the removal proceedings.

The matter drew wide public interest in Ghana, fueling debate on judicial independence, fair procedure, and constitutional rule amid her exit. The ECOWAS Court’s ruling upholds the steps taken against the former Chief Justice and Supreme Court judge.

More details on the judgment, including the court’s findings and legal grounds for rejecting the suit, are expected once the full decision is published.
