The Economic Community of West African States Commission has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Commission President James Victor Gbeho, describing his death as a significant loss to Ghana, West Africa and the international diplomatic community.
In a statement issued on Sunday, June 14, the Commission said it had received news of the veteran diplomat’s passing with “profound sorrow,” paying tribute to his decades of distinguished service to regional integration, diplomacy and peacebuilding.
Ambassador Gbeho served as President of the ECOWAS Commission from February 18, 2010, to March 1, 2012, during a critical period in the organisation’s history following reforms that transformed the former ECOWAS Executive Secretariat into a Commission.
According to ECOWAS, his leadership played an important role in strengthening the institution, advancing regional integration efforts and enhancing the bloc’s standing as one of Africa’s most successful regional organisations.
Longstanding Service to Regional Peace and Diplomacy
The Commission noted that Ambassador Gbeho’s contributions to ECOWAS predated his appointment as Commission President.
In September 1995, he was appointed ECOWAS Special Representative for Liberia, where he played a pivotal role in regional efforts aimed at restoring peace, stability and constitutional governance during one of the country’s most challenging periods.
Beyond his work with ECOWAS, Ambassador Gbeho held several prominent national and international positions throughout his diplomatic career. He served as Ghana’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and later as the United Nations Special Representative for Somalia.
ECOWAS praised his unwavering dedication to diplomacy, regional cooperation, peacebuilding and public service, noting that his contributions left a lasting impact on Ghana, West Africa and the wider international community.
Condolences to Family and Nation
The Commission extended its condolences to Ambassador Gbeho’s family, President John Dramani Mahama, the Government and people of Ghana, members of the diplomatic community across West Africa, and all those who worked alongside him during his distinguished career.
“The Commission joins them in mourning the loss of an accomplished diplomat, an esteemed regional leader, and a dedicated servant of peace and integration,” the statement said.
ECOWAS added that Ambassador Gbeho’s legacy of service, diplomacy and commitment to regional unity would be remembered with deep respect and gratitude, concluding its tribute with a prayer that his soul rest in perfect peace.
