The Ministry of Education has ordered the Ghana Education Service (GES) to launch an urgent probe into the violent clash at Obuasi Senior High Technical School and punish anyone found guilty under the law.
The order comes after the school’s headteacher was attacked and school property was destroyed. Students accused him of burying a baby on campus. In a statement released on Wednesday, August 5 and signed by the Deputy Education Minister, Dr. Clement Apaak, the Ministry condemned the incident, calling it criminal and unacceptable.
“The Ministry views this act of violence and lawlessness as reprehensible and criminal. Such behaviour has no place in Ghana’s schools and will not be tolerated,” the statement read.
The Ministry said all investigations and disciplinary actions must follow the rules and regulations guiding education in Ghana. It also restated its commitment to enforcing discipline in schools, noting that discipline is key to quality education.
The Ministry pledged to keep working with GES and other state agencies to protect students, safeguard school heads, and keep schools safe for teaching and learning.
Reports indicate the incident happened between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. A student said he saw the headteacher’s vehicle near the school’s waste dump. He raised an alarm, drawing other students to the spot, where they allegedly found the body of a baby believed to be between five and six months old. The students then confronted the headteacher, assaulted him, and damaged school property. The headteacher suffered several injuries and is currently being treated at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.
