Fire at GRIDCo Substation Disrupts Power Supply to Parts of Accra
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsAppp

A fire outbreak at a substation operated by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) at Mallam has disrupted electricity supply to parts of Accra, including Lapaz, Mallam and Awoshie.

The blaze reportedly destroyed control boards and transformers at the facility, raising concerns about the impact on electricity transmission and supply to affected communities.

The extent of the damage and the timeline for restoring normal operations have not yet been confirmed.

Firefighters from the Adjen Kotoku and Amasaman fire stations responded to the incident and worked to contain the blaze.

Their intervention helped prevent the fire from spreading to other critical installations within the substation, limiting the potential damage to additional equipment.

Cause of fire yet to be established

The cause of the outbreak remains unknown. Further investigations are expected to establish the circumstances that led to the incident.

Technical assessments will also be required to determine the full extent of the damage and identify the repairs needed to restore the affected installations.

Potential impact on electricity supply

GRIDCo operates Ghana’s national electricity transmission network, transporting power from generation facilities to distribution companies for onward supply to consumers.

Substations are critical to this system, housing transformers, control boards and other equipment that regulate and manage electricity flows.

Damage to such installations can disrupt transmission operations and complicate efforts to restore a stable electricity supply to affected communities.

Residents in the affected areas await further updates on restoration efforts and when normal power supply is expected to resume.
