A warehouse storing rubber products and an adjoining takeaway shop were destroyed by fire in the early hours of Tuesday, August 4, in the Tema Industrial Area.
One firefighter was hurt while trying to control the blaze. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the fire started around 12:40 a.m., and triggered an immediate response.
Four fire tenders from Tema Industrial, Devtraco, Motorway and Free Zones Fire Stations were sent to the scene to fight the flames and stop them from spreading to nearby businesses.
During the operation, a section of a wall caved in and injured a fire officer. He was taken to Tema General Hospital and is currently being treated. After several hours of intense work, the fire was put out. Firefighters are still at the site carrying out salvage and overhaul duties to deal with hotspots and make the structures safe.
The full extent of the damage is not yet known, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
