Heavy and intermittent rains on Monday have caused severe flooding in Kpetoe in the Volta Region, submerging the Kpetoe Bridge on the Ho–Denu Highway and disrupting transportation and economic activities in the area.
As of the early hours of Tuesday, June 30, the swollen Tordze River had risen above the bridge, forcing the suspension of vehicular movement along the route.
The flooding has also inundated several homes, while extensive damage has been reported to farms and livestock.
The Agotime-Ziope District Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Courage Agba, told Graphic Online that no fatalities had been recorded despite the scale of the flooding.
According to him, about 500 residents have been displaced by the disaster.
Mr. Agba identified the worst-affected communities as Agorve, Aborme, Asito, Afetor Yesu Kope, Unity Club and nearby Kpekuita.
A rescue team from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has been deployed to the area to assist affected residents and support ongoing relief efforts.
The flooding has brought economic activity in Kpetoe to a standstill, with many residents assessing the damage to their homes, farms and livelihoods.
