The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has justified the government’s decision to recruit 7,000 teachers, citing financial limitations despite criticism that the number is insufficient.
Speaking at the launch of the eLearning Africa Conference on Tuesday, April 14, he explained that budget constraints have hindered the government’s ability to hire more teachers.
“If resources were available, we’d be employing up to 50,000 teachers nationwide, but budgetary constraints won’t allow it. We sought clearance to recruit 7,000 degree and diploma holders, and the process has been transparent,” he said.
The minister assured the recruitment process was fair and open, emphasizing that the government is doing its best within the given circumstances. He also also highlighted plans to introduce a digital education policy to address systemic issues and improve learning outcomes, aiming to bridge the gap in the country’s education system.
