The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has strengthened its operational capacity with the commissioning of a new dog kennel facility at Volta Barracks in Ho.
The facility, inaugurated on April 29, 2026, was constructed with support from the German Armed Forces Technical Advisory Group, which also donated a Toyota Land Cruiser to the 66 Artillery Regiment.
Commanding Officer of the regiment, Jalali Din Ibrahim, said the integration of a K9 unit within an artillery formation reflects evolving security demands and the need for adaptive military strategies. He noted that the initiative enhances operational readiness.
He commended the Ghana Military Police and the National Dog Academy for ensuring standardisation, training, and professional management of the facility, while also acknowledging the continued support of GAFTAG.
Acting Provost Marshal, Emmanuel Tete Doke, highlighted the growing importance of military working dogs in modern operations, particularly in counter-terrorism, noting their role in detecting narcotics, ammunition, and explosives.
Guest of Honour, George Dottey, Deputy Brigade Commander of the 16 Artillery Brigade, urged proper management of the facility to maximise its effectiveness and commended stakeholders for their contributions.
The National Dog Academy, which originated from a presidential security dog unit established in 1964, remains the central training institution for military K9 operations, supporting internal security and force protection efforts nationwide.
