The Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs has called on the government to step up efforts to fight illegal mining (galamsey) in tribute to the eight people killed in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
The victims were headed to Obuasi for an anti-galamsey event when the military chopper crashed. After signing the condolence book at the Defence Ministry, Nii Odaifio Welentse III, President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, cautioned that not tackling the issue decisively would diminish the meaning of their sacrifice.
“If we cannot deal with this holistically, once and for all, then these gallant soldiers died for nothing. We should all rise and deal with galamsey,” he said.
The crash victims were Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed (MP), Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Mr. Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah — all of whom served Ghana with distinction. Except for Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, buried on August 10, the rest will be laid to rest on August 15, 2025.
