The Volta Regional branch of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) has urged stakeholders to take concrete action against discrimination facing persons with albinism as Ghana joins the world to mark the 2026 International Albinism Awareness Day.
In a press statement issued on Friday, June 13, the Volta Regional President of GFD, Elikplim Afua Klu, said the celebration under the theme “Proudly in My Skin, Celebrating All Skin Tones” was a reminder that diversity was a strength and that every person deserved dignity regardless of skin colour.
“Persons with albinism continue to experience challenges, including discrimination, stigma, social exclusion, limited access to education and employment opportunities and inadequate access to essential healthcare services, particularly eye and skin care,” the statement said.
The Federation commended the Persons with Albinism Association of Ghana for its advocacy and support across the country.
It called on government, local authorities, traditional leaders, schools, health institutions, media and the general public to promote inclusion and reject harmful myths about albinism.
Further, GFD urged government and policymakers to strengthen programmes that improve access to healthcare, inclusive education, social protection, and employment for persons with albinism, and to enforce laws against discrimination.
It also asked media organisations to challenge stereotypes and promote positive stories about persons with albinism.
“To all persons with albinism, we say: Be proud of who you are. Your skin is beautiful, your identity matters and your contribution to society is valuable,” said Ms. Klu.
The Federation reaffirmed its commitment to work with government, civil society, and development partners to promote equality and social justice for persons with albinism.International Albinism Awareness Day is observed annually on June 13 to highlight the rights of persons with albinism worldwide.
