Ghana has moved up to sixth place among the world’s top gold producers for 2025, with output hitting 185 tonnes, the Ghana Chamber of Mines has announced.
The new position marks a jump from Ghana’s usual seventh spot, after the country pushed past the United States due to higher local production and a drop in US output.
The Director of Analysis, Research and Finance at the Chamber, Christopher Nyarko, revealed this during an interview. “We are number six. We’re number six now, right after Peru. So globally, China, Russia, Australia, Canada, Peru, then Ghana comes in, and then the United States follow,” he said.
Mr Nyarko said Ghana has long held seventh place worldwide but overtook the United States in 2025 following falling production in America. “Last year, Ghana overtook the US, but traditionally, we’ve always been number seven,” Mr Nyarko said. [
He blamed the US decline partly on operational problems in Nevada, one of America’s key gold mining regions. “Last year, they ran into a number of technical issues. So production for the country as a whole dropped. And of course, given the dynamics in Ghana, we saw Ghana displace the United States,” he added.
According to Mr Nyarko, China stayed top of the global list, followed by Russia, Australia, Canada and Peru.He however pointed out that positions among the leading producers can shift based on data sources, especially for China, Russia and Australia.
“Even depending on the kind of source of your data, there’s always some tension between Russia, China, and Australia, in terms of who is the largest producer,” he said.
He said the Chamber used independent data to track global gold production numbers.Ghana’s rise to sixth follows a record output at home, with the country producing 5.94 million ounces in 2025.Artisanal and small-scale mining contributed 52.38 per cent of total production, beating the large-scale segment for the first time in Ghana’s over 100-year history of commercial mining.
The Chamber expects Ghana’s gold output to grow further in 2026, projecting national production between 6.1 million and 6.7 million ounces.
