A major technical fault at Ghana’s Gas processing facility has forced an emergency shutdown of operations, leading to a temporary disruption in gas supply to power plants and subsequent outages in parts of the country.
In a joint statement, the Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) and Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) disclosed that the incident was triggered by the complete failure of the Burner Management System (BMS) controller for the Heat Medium System (HMS) at the plant.
Preliminary assessments indicate that the affected system has sustained significant damage and will require full replacement.
The development has necessitated an immediate shutdown of the plant, resulting in a curtailment of gas supply to thermal power plants—an outcome that has already begun affecting electricity supply in some areas.
Engineers have since commenced a comprehensive technical and safety risk assessment to determine the safest and most efficient way to restore operations.
According to the statement, a dedicated team is working around the clock to replace the damaged components and fast-track the resumption of gas processing.
Authorities say, subject to the outcome of ongoing assessments, efforts are underway to begin restoring operations within the course of the day.
The two institutions assured the public that updates will be provided as the situation evolves, while urging citizens to exercise patience amid the disruption.
They also apologised for the inconvenience caused, noting that all necessary measures are being taken to resolve the issue and stabilise power supply as quickly as possible.
