Ghana Launches Commercial EV Charging Rate

Ghana has introduced its first commercial electric vehicle (EV) charging tariff as part of a broader utility price reduction, announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) on March 13, 2026.

The new rate sets EV charging at 201.6 Ghana pesewas (GH¢2.016) per kilowatt-hour, with a monthly service charge of GH¢500, marking a milestone in regulated commercial EV electricity pricing.

The EV tariff introduction coincides with an average 4.81% electricity rate cut and a 3.06% water tariff reduction, effective April 1, 2026, following PURC’s quarterly review. Residential electricity users will see reductions ranging from 1.66% for low-consumption households to 3.63% for high-consumption non-residential users. Medium- and high-voltage commercial and industrial customers will benefit from cuts of up to 15.43%.

Water customers will also pay less, with lifeline residential users (0–5 cubic meters) seeing tariffs drop from GH¢612.25 to GH¢593.49 per cubic meter. PURC said the adjustments reflect changes in the Ghana Cedi-US Dollar exchange rate, inflation, natural gas prices, and electricity generation mix, ensuring utility providers’ financial viability. “The quarterly review ensures tariffs remain fair for consumers while supporting service providers’ operational needs,” said Shafic Suleman, PURC Executive Secretary.
