The Majority Leader, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has labeled Ghana’s Parliament among Africa’s most transparent legislatures, stating it is currently ranked second on the continent for openness and citizen access.
His remarks come as Parliament pushes ahead with efforts to boost public participation and legislative accountability through wider media coverage and digital engagement programs.
Addressing a Leadership Media Briefing on Friday, May 22, 2026, as Parliament reconvened, Mr. Ayariga said Ghana’s legislative system has achieved major gains in transparency, largely due to real-time broadcasts of sittings.
“In Africa, we are one of the most open parliaments. In fact, we are number two in Africa. I believe that our aspiration is that we become number one in Africa,” he said.
He noted that while discussions persist on ranking methods and parliamentary groupings, Ghana’s single-chamber system and reforms have helped secure its high position.
“There is an issue whether we should be put in the category of those who practise the bicameral parliament. We have a unicameral Parliament. But they have number one, and we followed,” he said.
Mr. Ayariga added that live TV coverage of parliamentary debates has enhanced openness and may lift Ghana’s position in upcoming evaluations.“Now that we have live television broadcasting of our proceedings, in the next rating they might probably review that and Ghana may climb to the top as a parliament,” he added.
