President John Dramani Mahama has held bilateral talks with the President of the Republic of Korea, Lee Jae Myung, reaffirming the strong and longstanding partnership between Ghana and South Korea.
The high-level meeting culminated in the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering maritime security, climate change cooperation, and digital technology, marking a significant step in strengthening collaboration between the two countries.
Speaking after the meeting, President Mahama emphasized the deep historical ties between Ghana and Korea, noting that the relationship is anchored on shared democratic values, respect for human rights, and a commitment to multilateral cooperation.
According to him, these shared principles have enabled both countries to work closely together in global institutions, particularly within the United Nations, where Ghana and Korea often advance common positions on key international issues.
President Mahama also highlighted the growing cooperation between the two nations in agriculture and agribusiness, particularly through initiatives supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
He explained that the programmes are helping Ghana boost rice production and strengthen food security while creating new opportunities for local farmers.
The President further pointed to opportunities for expanding economic cooperation between the two countries, especially through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
He noted that the presence of the AfCFTA Secretariat in Accra positions Ghana as a strategic gateway for Korean businesses seeking to access the broader African market.
According to him, Ghana offers significant investment opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, digital technology, and infrastructure.
President Mahama expressed optimism that Ghana’s rich natural resources and youthful human capital, combined with Korea’s technological innovation and industrial expertise, would continue to drive a mutually beneficial partnership.
He said the strengthened cooperation between the two nations would support sustainable development and create shared prosperity for both countries.
The meeting between the two leaders is expected to further deepen diplomatic, economic and technological ties between Ghana and the Republic of Korea in the years ahead.
