Ghana remains the largest gold producer in Africa, with an impressive output of 4.8 million ounces in 2024, according to Michael Edem Akafia, President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition, which was monitored by Ghanaian RADAR, Mr. Akafia highlighted Ghana’s continued dominance in the continent’s gold production and its significant presence on the global stage.
While he acknowledged the industry’s positive performance, he noted underlying challenges that require attention. He emphasized Ghana’s reputation as a mature and attractive mining destination, which should be leveraged to further boost the sector.
Mr. Akafia attributed the surge in gold production to small-scale mining, which saw a significant jump from 1.1 million ounces in 2023 to 1.9 million ounces in 2024. Large-scale production, however, remained stagnant at around 2.9 million ounces.
The industry is closely watching the government’s planned overhaul of mining laws, which has raised concerns among stakeholders. Despite these concerns, Ghana continues to strengthen its position as a global mining hub.
