President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana will implement a free visa policy for all African citizens starting May 25, 2026, in celebration of Africa Day.
Under the new policy, travellers from across the continent will be able to apply online for e-visas at no cost, a move aimed at removing financial barriers to intra-African travel and promoting regional integration.
The announcement was made during bilateral discussions with Emmerson Mnangagwa on the sidelines of an African Union summit.
President Mahama said the initiative is part of efforts to deepen continental cooperation and ease mobility among African nations. He also highlighted the existing visa-free arrangement between Ghana and Zimbabwe, which allows citizens of both countries to travel without requiring visas.
Despite the removal of visa fees, the President assured that national security will remain a priority. He noted that robust screening mechanisms have been put in place to assess applicants before travel authorisation is granted.
Currently, only a few African countries—including Rwanda, Seychelles, and The Gambia—offer visa-free access to all African travellers.
The new policy positions Ghana among countries taking steps to enhance free movement and strengthen economic and cultural ties across the continent.
